How to know if your child is sick

Somebody recently told me about the WebMD website.....all I can say is, "Where have you been all my life?!" It has everything you need to know about health, illness, how to eat right, how to get in shape- you name it, they've got it! It even tells you what your illness may be based on your symptoms. Just click where it says "symptoms" under the search box on the top of the page and you can actually type in the symptoms you are having and it will tell you what you may have. You can also click on the "Health A-Z" tab and type in what you want to know about any specific illness. It is so cool!

So the other day my daughter looked like this all day:
And I couldn't figure out what her problem was. Finally I thought, "Well, maybe she has an ear infection...." but I had no idea what the symptoms of an ear infection were. And I didn't want to call the doctor because they already think I am a crazy, over-protective mom that calls every time my kid sneezes to make sure she doesn't have yellow fever...so I wasn't sure what to do.

That's when my friend told me about www.webmd.com and it changed my life! I love how user friendly it is and now I don't have to feel like I have to call the doctor for every little thing. Plus it gives you tips on how to treat your illness without having to run out and get a prescription. Love it!

I highly recommend trying it out if you ever have questions about your health. It's a hidden treasure!

Here's to our health!

My First Stroller Strides Class!

Today was my very first Stroller Strides Class and I LOVED it!! I'm not gonna lie, I am totally going to be sore in the morning. I did not realize what I a great workout program Stroller Strides was. We met at Mt. Trashmore at 9:30 AM this morning and it looked a little like this:

I know this looks a little overwhelming, but it was actually quite organized. They were celebrating their 10th Anniversary with a Big Shebang! They had several groups of 10 or moms and children (in strollers of course) doing the hour long class. I happened to be placed in the third class to get started. My instructors were Jen and Jen and they were wonderful!!! Super friendly and awesome at giving instructions. Of course, right before we got in our first circle for a warm up Maggie threw up her morning milk ....all....over....everything! So yeah, that was a great first impression. But what I loved about Stroller Strides is how down-to-Earth all of the moms were and how friendly and accommodating everyone was. I never felt out of place- I was immediately welcomed in and accepted....even with a spoiled milk smelling one year old.

I dragged my friend Kimberly along with me to try out this free class (there is a membership usually, but since they were celebrating 10 years, this class was completely free). So in all there were three kids in strollers and we had a blast!

After warming up we pushed the kids to the next stop. We were able to either power walk or jog. Once we stopped we all got in another circle and did leg exercises. We also had the option to either run up the big hill at Mt. Trashmore or do jumping jacks in place by our strollers. At our second stop we had the same option, and I got a little more into it and ran the hill. My legs will be burning in the morning! When we did squats our instructor had us sing the ABC's to help keep the kids engaged. We did a total of 6-7 stops with walking or running in between. At each stop were arm and leg exercises that really got our heart rate up and worked the muscles. I didn't realize how out of shape I was until I did this today. I LOVED the workout! Towards the end Maggie started to get a little restless, but for the majority of the hour long class all the kids were pretty good. There is so much to look at since we were at the park, plus all the other children to look at that she was pretty distracted. Once we got back to where we started we did an Ab workout and then a cool down. Since they were celebrating 10 years they gave everyone goody bags and raffle tickets and at the end they raffled off LOTS of prizes. Kimberly and I didn't win anything, but we still really enjoyed the class.

Of course afterwards we had to let the kids enjoy the park for a little while:

My schedule is hectic right now, but when I have an opening I am definitely going to try to join Stroller Strides. It is a great workout and a great way to meet other moms in the area.

A Great Day with the Animals at the Virginia Zoo

Today was the perfect day to go to the Virginia Zoo in Norfolk. The weather is cooling off and the kids are back in school so there was hardly anyone there. It was awesome! We started off by hitting up the bathroom because Maggie spilled water all over her adorable skinny jeans- so she needed to be changed. After that we grabbed a picnic table and had lunch. Once lunch was over we were off to see the animals....well after a pit stop to sit on a giant pretend turtle.

Next we went to see the monkeys. There was a baby monkey that was so adorable. They swung around and put on a little show for us....at least that is what we thought they were doing. It was so cute watching the baby monkey trying to follow his daddy and mommy.

We went around to see the tiger but he wasn't near the window. We also saw the big bears, birds, reptiles, elephants and giraffes. The giraffe was super close to us!

Around the time we were going to see the elephants the clouds starting rolling in. I didn't want to be stuck there so we started rushing through the rest of the animal displays to get back to the entrance so we could leave. We didn't get rained on and we got to see all of the animals! We had such a fun time.

We have a pass so we get into the Virginia Zoo for free, if you don't have a pass the prices for admission are as follows:
  • Adults: $11
  • Children: $9 (ages 2-11)
  • Senior Citizens: $10 (ages 62 and older)
  • With Valid Military I.D.: $10
  • Current AAA Member: $10
  • Children under 2: Free
  • Virginia Zoo Members: Free
  • With Valid Norfolk College Student I.D.: Free
  • Individual with ADA-Recognized Disability and One Companion: Free

Consignment Sales going on this Fall

The fall season is upon us, which means we are starting to put away our summer tank tops and pull out the sweaters. I love fall! I love everything about it. I love the smells, the colors, the cool air- LOVE FALL! Seriously, I do. One thing that I love about fall are the consignment sales that are going on in Hampton Roads. Consignment sales that encourage you to get rid of clothes that don't fit, make room for winter clothes, and put a little extra cash in your pocket!

Last spring I attended the Kids Exchange Consignment Sale and had a blast. I sold back some of Maggie's clothes and toys that she no longer needed (of course the super cute ones I kept in case we have another girl) and volunteered at the sale so I could make a higher percentage back. Not only did I make a little money, but I got to meet some really sweet moms while doing it. The girls in charge of the Kids Exchange are organized and helpful and I met a couple other moms that were really nice too. And it's fun tagging and pricing. Even my hubby got in on the "tagging action."

I highly recommend checking out the Kids Exchange and/or some of these other consignment sales that are going on this fall. Even if you don't have time to sell this season, at least go there to shop and see what they are all about. I will probably be shopping at most of these sales because I LOVE a good deal! Here are the details about a few consignment sales going on this Fall:

Beach Baptisms

Tonight my church had baptisms at the beach. It was the first time we have done beach baptisms and we had such a great time! We met at 2nd street on Virginia Beach where they have a really fantastic, new playground for the kids and a parking lot right there so there was easy access to the beach. There were 9 people that got baptized! We had a great crowd from our church come out to support those that got baptized. Here are a few shots I got of the baptisms.

I really love baptisms! It's an outward way for us to show that we have made a commitment to Jesus. Seeing people take this next step in their faith is so cool and emotional in a good way. I also really love how it brings us closer as a church family! I love my church!!

If you are looking for a great church in Hampton Roads, check out Clearview Church. We meet at 10 AM on Sundays at Salem Middle School in Virginia Beach. Click here to check out our website.

Make Friday the 13th a Fun Day!

Tomorrow is Friday the 13th! EEEEEEEK! Okay, so I am completely and totally not superstitious in any way....but I was thinking about how this day doesn't come around very often, and with Halloween around the corner people will probably make a big deal out of it. So why not make a big deal out of it in a good way?!

So I came up with 13 ways you can celebrate Friday the 13th in a NON Superstitious way!

1. Hide 13 notes around the house- one leads to another, sort of like a scavenger hunt and the 13th note has a piece of candy or some sort of prize attached to it. Make sure you number each note so they don't find the wrong one and jump ahead.

2. Throw 13 pennies into the fountain at the mall.

3. Play "Mother May I" but everything they do has to have the number 13 in it. For example, "May I take 13 baby steps?" Or "May I take 13 hops?"

4. Make black cat puppets out of brown paper bags and have a puppet show!

5. Bake a cake and let your little one help. Make sure they help draw the number 13 on the cake with icing and use lots of sprinkles- maybe even 13 different kinds of sprinkles if you have that many.

6. Have a magic show! Pull out a cap, hat, and a deck of cards and let your child come up with his or her own magic tricks. Remind them to say "Abracadabra!"

7. Go on a hunt for 4-leaf clovers.

8. Have a campfire and tell spooky stories. If you have a fire pit outside that is perfect. If you don't, get a few empty toilet paper rolls with yellow and orange construction or tissue paper and have a pretend campfire. Make s'mores on the stove and have your child come up with a fun and/or spooky story to tell around the campfire.

9. Ask your child who their favorite Disney villain is and explain why. Then, watch that movie.

10. Make it educational! Have your child come up with math problems that always equal 13. For example 10 + 3 = 13 or 14 - 1 = 13. Have them come up with at least 13 problems.

11. Donate 13 items to charity.

12. Have play time set in 13 minute intervals. Set the timer on the stove for 13 minutes and do one activity such as Playdough or coloring and then when the timer goes off, set it again for 13 minutes and do a different activity. Once the timer goes off, the child has to drop what they are doing and go on to the next activity. This is perfect if you have multiple children because they don't always agree on what they want to play with. Now everyone wins!

13. Read 13 storybooks before going to bed....if your child make it that long before falling asleep.

Enjoy your Friday the 13th!

Maggie Loves her "Just Ones" Library Class!

Today was Maggie's first library class! She had such a great time. She got to see her friend there and meet new friends too. The class started by the teacher introducing herself and then we sang songs and danced, played with shakers, and read a cute story about a mouse.

Of course, all the other children were sitting nicely in their mom's laps on the big story time carpet while my very independent child tried to sit on a chair in the corner. I guess she is "too good" for the carpet. But she joined in on the fun when she saw a mouse puppet and had a blast playing with the other children.

This is the first class that I have taken Maggie to and I have to admit I had a bit of anxiety with how she would be. She has a "do it myself" demeanor and I had nightmares that all the other children would be sitting perfectly, patiently, and contently all the while wondering what was wrong with "that kid over there". But to my delight- there wasn't anything to be worried about. It was very laid back and the other children were exploring the room just like Maggie was. I just have to always remind myself that she isn't "being bad" just because she is testing out the world around her. I need to guide her and make sure she doesn't get hurt, but I constantly have to remind myself to have patience while my little one learns and grows.

We are excited about her class next Wednesday and all the fun she will have throughout this fall library class. Reading is so important even when they are young and this class makes reading and learning fun- if you haven't signed up for a library story time class I highly recommend it! It's fun, free, and educational- can't go wrong there!

Take time to smell the roses!

It is a B.E.A.Utiful day today in Hampton Roads! I have a hundred things on my To-Do List, but sometimes you have to stop and smell the roses. So today, William and I forgot about how we had to clean the tub, do the dishes, and fix the outside light, and took Maggie outside with her Power Wheels bike....and my scarf that she absolutely had to wear and let her test out her new wheels. She loved it! And she looked about as cute as ever riding around with her sunglasses and scarf.

As a mom and wife, I feel like I never rest. I always have something I should be doing and I feel guilty if I take time to rest or sit. But life is short....and the smile on Maggie's face today when she drove that bike around was .... well, priceless. And I will ALWAYS remember that....I won't always remember that cup that needs to be cleaned, or that stain that I need to get out of that shirt. Those things do need to get done, but don't worry, you will find time to do it eventually. Take time to embrace the moments that matter and don't feel guilty about it. When your kids are grown, you will be glad you took time to watch them become who they are!

Tips for the New School Year

The summer has come to an end and it is time for school to start tomorrow. I can't believe how quickly time flies! Of course, I don't have a child in school, so not too much will change around here expect for now I will be watching three adorable boys two days a week because their mom is going back to school (she is a teacher). So instead of having a three day weekend every weekend- we are back to getting up early, making lunches, and getting back on a schedule!

I have to admit, I LOVE summer. I like not having a set schedule. I love sleeping in. I love spending quality time with my little peanut- AKA- Maggie. But on the other hand, there are pros to having a schedule! I love lists, I love my days to be planned out, I love ROUTINE! I really, really love routine. I am not a "fly by the seat of my pants kinda person"....at all!! I love my dry erase calendar that is hanging on my refrigerator. I always get a little happy picking out the color I will use for that month on the calender when filling in our schedules and events. And with it being the beginning of September AND the beginning of the school year, we have a lot of things to pencil...I mean dry erase marker...in on our calendar.

The beginning of the school year is a time to start a clean slate. So here are a few tips on how to get on a schedule- but not overwhelm yourself:

1. Decide when you will get ready for school.
Do you want to wake up a half hour early in the morning and get book bags together, sign papers, make lunches, etc? Or do you want to do it the night before? If you are a morning person- definitely get up before the kiddos do- turn on the news in the background and get everything ready for the day. If you are a "snooze button" type of person- I suggest doing it the night before. You will be happy you did when you can get a few extra minutes of shut eye.

2. Make a pact to be five minutes early.
Lets not start the first day of school off with your child running after the bus as it pulls away because you just couldn't get out the door on time. If you have to- set your clock forward 5-10 minutes like I do. That way you will definitely be early. Also, try to make a pact with yourself- you WILL be on time even after the first week of school. I know I sometimes start out great and then after a few weeks start to get up a little later and get to work a little late. Make a pact that you will be on time even when it gets hard. It's time to turn over a new leaf.

3. Get the kids involved- but not too involved!
It's almost fall- which means you will be taking Johnny to soccer, Jayne to dance class, Joey to Fall Ball, and Janice to swim lessons. It is AWESOME to have your kids involved in extra curricular activities. It is a great way to have them make friends, stay active, and work on skills that they are good at. However, do not overwhelm your family. If you have something going every single night of the week- it's too much! Limit the kids to one or two activities that they love the most. You are not a taxi service- and in order for you to stay a tight-knit family you actually have to see each other every now and then. Make sure you have a few nights a week where you are still able to sit down around the table and eat together. As they said in the "Godfather," "A man who doesn't spend time with his family can never be a real man."

4. Get er' done.
When the kids get home- make homework a priority. Give them a few minutes to grab a snack, talk about their day, and unwind, and then jump into their homework right away. What they learned is still fresh in their heads and if they don't do it right away, they may forget. In other countries, kids go to school for 12 hours a day- I promise, doing their homework as soon as they get home will not kill them.

5. Take time to listen.
Take time to listen to your kids as they talk about their day at school. Treasure the moments when your kids go on and on and on about something silly that happened on the playground. Cherish these moments because you will blink and they will be graduating- yes, it goes that fast!

Hopefully these few tips will help your family stay organized as we jump into the new school year. I am excited about the things to come!

Sincerely,
Ali
